The general nature of an arson investigator’s work is mostly straightforward. Arson investigators investigate fires to determine the cause. They then gather proof that the fire was intentionally set and document all of the actions and steps taken in the investigation. The investigator then presents the evidence and outcome of his investigation to gain a trial to convict the arsonist. The investigator then acts as an expert witness while the accused has his trial. Arson investigators in Pennsylvania must have a certificate through the state in fire arson investigation. Classes for the certification can be taken at the Pennsylvania fire academy. After receiving the state certificate, an investigator can then attend a yearly seminar with the Pennsylvania Association for Arson Investigators in State College. If an investigator wants, he can be certified internationally through the International Association of Arson Investigators and take free classes to maintain certification credit on the association's website, CFITrainer.net. An individual can also become an investigator by attending college. Colleges offering degrees in Arson investigation is few and far between, but the best known is Eastern Kentucky University.
