Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration created in 1966 to honor the African-American community, family and culture. The name comes from Swahili and means harvest. The holiday lasts seven days, from 26 December to 1 January. Each day celebrates one of seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Families celebrate Kwanzaa by decorating their houses with African art, dressing in traditional and colorful African clothing, dancing and playing African drums. Kwanzaa has seven symbols.
