La Brea Tar Pits
Have you ever visited the La Brea Tar Pit? The tar pits are located in Los Angeles, California. Tar pits are important to history because of the plant and animal fossils found inside of the tar. When you visit the Tar pits, you will see a pit of black tar surrounded by land filled with plants and animals. Tar pits are made by oil getting into the cracks of the Earth and the oil evaporates to make heavy and sticky tar. Gaspar de Portola discovered the tar pits in 1769 and his trip was recorded by Juan Cespi. An interesting event that occurred at the La Brea Tar Pits was when a mother elephant got stuck and there was nothing she or her babies could do to save her, and you can see this at the museum.
