Tinkling as it hits the floor, glass shatters into a million pieces. Loudly, sirens and alarms blare as the figure in black creeps into the jewelry store through the broken window. Suddenly, the frightened burglar starts to panic as she anticipates the arrival of the police. Many crimes like this robbery are committed all the time in a place called La Limonada. Except in this town, there are no police officers that will come and arrest the criminals, for the town is so overrun with crime that the police don’t dare step foot in that neighborhood. In “La Limonada”, Jonathan deeply hopes for a future with a purpose. As he is constantly living in fear of death, Jonathan feels that he could be more than someone who is barely surviving in La Limonada. He longs to be a well known celebrity, especially a singer (12). For him, feeling important is everything because Jonathan almost always looked down upon. Overall, dreaming of becoming a celebrity represents Jonathan’s hope to fulfill a meaningful life in his future. Because of the extreme violence, poverty, and crime in La Limonada, Jonathan is abused, stolen from, and poverty stricken, so naturally he wished to flee his neighborhood. In “La Limonada”, he writes that he wants to “hit the jackpot” and escape to the United States (7). It is “hitting the jackpot” because people bravely survived, let alone escaped from La Limonada. But he is determined to flee his country to California, his dream home. Jonathan describes his vision of paradise in Las Angeles, where he imagines an easy life full of fun, food, and games on the beach (7).
