“Professor for a Day” by Bob Laemmle
Cal State LA business and economic students had chance to met with Bob Laemmle, the owner of Laemmle Theatres, who discussed his life and career as a successful businessmen in the University Student Union, Los Angeles Room. Laemmle Theatres is a group of family run art house movie theatres in the Los Angeles area. He told us that it was established in 1938 by his father Max and uncle Karl, this family-run business has grown from the then-single-screen Los Feliz Theatre in the late 1950s to nine theaters and 39 screens, including West Hollywood's Sunset Five, one of the nation's most successful alternative theater complexes. Bob Laemmle earned a B.A. in Business Administration at Cal State LA in 1958 and Master's Degree in Finance from UCLA. He also played basketball at Cal State LA and earned first team all championship honors in 1957 and 1958. He was inducted into the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Laemmle Theatres celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2013 in seven locations such as Play House 7 in Pasadena, Claremont 7 in Claremont, Music Hall in Beverly Hills, Monica 4-Plex in Santa Monica, Royal Theatre in West Los Angeles, Town Center 5 in Encino, and NoHo 7 in North Hollywood.
