Laertes is very concern about her image because he doesn’t want her to get hurt and others look at her different because she is not with Hamlet. He expresses this with Ophelia in (Act 1 Scene 3 line 5-45) and says that she should be breaking up with Hamlet before it is too late and says that she should fear when she loses her virginity to Hamlet. Although it is fair of him to say that she should breakup with Hamlet because if she doesn’t breakup with Hamlet then when Hamlet breaks up with her she will look like an embarrassment. He tends to watch over Ophelia in an overprotective way but saying that she should fear losing her virginity is way out of hand.
The novel claims to have Laertes and Ophelia to have somewhat a regular brother/sister relationship when really Laertes is taking the whole overprotective thing way out of hand. Laertes is asking her about her sexaulity with Hamlet and first of all that is very weird and awkward to ask your own sister about that.
