In “The Capricious Camera” author Laila Ayads main idea is that sometimes what we detect isn’t necessarily what we receive. She centers her paper around Germany in the years 1933-1945. During the time period Hitler was the ruler of Germany. Hitler had a racial policy that floundered in which he wanted to make Nordic Aryans the main race. Also known as the “Lebensborn experiment” (Ayad 387). Consequently, the author then shows a picture asking if the photo was made to appear more menacing than it might’ve actually been. The photo she speaks of is a young girl posing for the photographer while Nazi troops survey her hometown. The author suggests that this information is important because depending on who took the photo we Would get a new or different meaning out of it. After this the author explores the caption which conveys, “Mounted Nazi troops on the lookout for likely Polish children.” (? would I put the author’s last name or the last name of the photographer) She expresses that the caption changes our view for the reason that, instead of leading us to experiments that might be taking place it was actually more related to the Holocaust. Before making her claim on what the photo means the author introduces background information, including some information on genetic breeding to create the perfect race, stating “...the practice of eugenics, improving humankind by eliminating undesirable genetic traits and breeding those that are considered superior. The SS soldiers commonly known for forcing Jews into concentration camps are mentioned, but this time they are discussed as the same men who were ordered to father white babies with German and Norwegian mothers.” (Ayad 391) The author then actively reveals the photo was related to the subject of breeding. Nevertheless, the author then claims that when information becomes available our perspective changes and makes us
