The song “Dark Paradise” by Lana Del Rey is a transparent story. It is easily understandable, but the context has a deeper meaning. In the song, Del Rey is grieving over the loss of a loved one. It can be assumed that the man she lost was a former lover. She describes that her lover is like a dark paradise. She loves the memories and dreams she has of him, but reality kicks in reminds her that it is only an imagination. She can still feel his presence, and wants nothing more than to be with him, even if it takes death. Del Rey uses a combination of figurative language to intensify her feelings. Her former lover goes by the code name of “K”. There are not many details of who K is, but other songs she has sung for him give reference. It is known that K and Del Rey fell in love in an innocent way, and grew to be wild. K ran an illegal electronic business that eventually took him to jail. He was sentenced for 30 years, as well as put on death row. It is unknown if he is deceased, but to Del Rey, she assumes he is. The conflict Del Rey faces is internal. She is fighting her own feelings of sadness that come from within. K could be seen as both the antagonist and protagonist. K is the fuel for her pleasant dreams, but the thought of K also hurts her. She is mildly delusional, she invisions K constantly in her head and lets him rule her life. His presence is haunting her and reminds her that life goes on, but she believes that true love is irreplaceable. Del Rey sings in one line, “But I wish I was dead, dead like you”, she does not want to live life without K, but holds back from committing suicide. She holds back because there is no guarantee if Heaven is real, or if he will be waiting for her. She lets logic rule over her decision, but remains to grief over her loss.
