8. Compare and contrast Langan and Oppenheimer.
Two very brilliant men, Chris Langan and Robert Oppenheimer had nearly identical mindsets in terms of education. Both participated in college and were intelligent people throughout their school careers. Their social skills is what sets them apart in particular. Chris Langan lacked the social skills he needed in order to succeed in college whereas Oppenheimer,” got the rest of the world to see things his way.”(99) How does this compare with Chris Langan? Well, if he hadn't lacked the social skills he needed he would have never lost his scholarship in college and he could have gotten his schedule moved from morning to afternoon classes. Robert Oppenheimer got away with attempted murder only to be punished with probation and therapy. Concerted cultivation creates a dominating relationship where the parents control their child's growth whereas accomplishment of natural growth promotes a sense of freedom which therefore creates an environment in which children are more likely to grow on their own. As stated by sociologist Annette Lareau, concerted cultivation attempts to,”foster and assess a child's talents, opinions, and skills.” (104) As mentioned earlier, this type of parenting primarily advocates that parents guide their child's growth.
