The first half of the Laramie Project was very interesting and hit close to home. I grew up in Colorado but spent every other summer in Worland Wyoming with my father and his family. Most of the people were good, hard working, honest people. They took care of their families and looked out for one another. But even as a young child I could see that ignorance ran deep in this part of the country. They didn't hate different people they just had old country thinking. They used words like the n word or spic but also thought guys like Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor were funny. This movie reminded me of those visits and helped me to remember how blessed I am to live in a place like Colorado with all the country beauty but open minded, new age thinking. …show more content…
I wasn't gay but I was from Colorado and I was different and some kids and hated me for that. The moment when the young boy describes finding Mathews body and when the officer finds out she may have contracted HIV, I was speechless and I literally felt my jaw drop. These scenes showed the cycle of destruction and the limitless butterfly effect that one awful, hate filled decision creates. The second part of this movie reminded me that everything happens for a reason and that even though the loss of Mathew Sheppard was horrific and devastating, it was necessary for the growth of human kind and definitely important to the growth of the Wyoming population. Wyoming has always been a little behind the rest of the country and this situation highlighted that ignorance is not bliss and that the people of Wyoming had been breeding hatred by ignoring the truths of how far the world has
