Late one afternoon during a fall break from school, I was standing outside of a neighbor’s door along with other strangers who I had no idea who they were, my grandfather, and my sisters and me. We were singing a song that now is very familiar, but at that time in age I was, I was too young to understand the meaning of it. Why did we do this every year? I wondered. I felt silly quite honestly to be doing it.
At the age of seven years old is the earliest recollection I can remember doing this tradition every year on the 24th of December. The tradition my family does every year, is called Las Posadas. Las Posadas is a Catholic Hispanic tradition celebrated each year in which we commemorate Mary and Joseph's difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a place for the Christ Child to be born. It is a religious event where family and friends come together each year and reenact Mary and Joseph going door to door asking for a place

The participants stand before the door of each house and sing a song in Spanish asking to enter the house. A small group remains inside the house telling the outside group that it is impossible to enter. Another family has been already selected to provide the Posada.
The group proceeds along the street to the Posada house. Again, the Posada group sings from outside of the selected house and a small group sings the response from inside the house where the Posada will take place. Once we are led inside the house we sign songs to baby Jesus, and we put him on his major alongside to his mother Mary and his father Joseph. Next to the scenery is a big bowl full of candies and confectioner sugar candy, and each person in the room must go and honor the new born Jesus, and may take a piece of candy.
It is then ended by praying the last rosary of the 9 days before this actual event takes place. All the small children and adults are encouraged to
