In the words of George Washington Carver, “Where there is no vision, there is no hope.” I am a forty-two year old first time college student. I have been enrolled as a full-time student at Kennedy-King College for over two years. I made a powerful investment into my future by enrolling in college. This was the most momentous decision that I have ever made in my life. College has provided various tools which have helped to enhance my leadership, communication, and networking skills. As I approach graduation, and also of obtaining an Associate’s Degree in English, I feel equipped with the confidence needed to go forward Governor’s State University, the four year undergraduate school of my choice.…show more content… This was the starting point of an illuminating a path to greatness. During my second semester, I began to apply to different clubs and organizations. I became an active member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor’s Society, One Million Degrees, and The Dual Degree Program. Eventually I became inclined to apply to apply for the position of a peer tutor. As a peer tutor, I noticed that the students would share their fears, and their lack of confidence in moving forward with their learning. I quickly interjected my experiences and information that I have gained to help. I often seek to edify and encourage my peers to continue contributing to their personal intellectual aspirations. Afterwards, the students always express their gratitude, and are thankful for the time and patience I display with my assistance. This is very rewarding. The statistics were not in my favor as an uneducated, single parent. The weight of this statistically burdening fact can be paralyzing to my mentality. I was disappointed and depressed and could not see my way clearly. My light was dim. Although I was trained in a professional skill to style hair, and instruct the students of cosmetology as well, I still had a feeling of incompleteness. As I have committed myself to pursue my education on a deeper level, I am trying to be conscious and aware of the objectives of what any professor is trying to convey in all of the courses that I have taken. My vision is starting to become clearer as I approach obtaining my first degree.
My sense of self efficacy plays an important role finishing strong. My G.P.A of 3.75 is a direct reflection of this. I am actively engaged in my education for the enjoyment of learning. I have noticed that my voice has become stronger. I have demonstrated that I can withstand the pressures of being a mother, and a student. All of the obstacles that life propels at one suddenly. I am a trailblazer and I have ignited my path to success through my self-determination.
