Hollis describes the tensions at the height of the McCarthy era. The masked heroes had to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and were all forced to reveal their identities. However, Hooded Justice refused to testify and disappeared. As Hooded Justice disappears as does strong man Rolf Müller which raises the question to if they were the same man. Without villains to fight the dressing up to fight crime became pointless. By the time, Dr. Manhattan became a hero in the 60s the rest of the heroes became has-beens and were no longer needed.
