Micah now lives a happy life as a young boy after going through his premature birth, but not all babies are given this chance. Abortions are not simply removing a piece of tissue from the mother, it is a separate and unique life to her. Babies after 20 weeks have the chance to survive on their own due to modern medicine. The author states in his later paragraphs that late-term abortions are felt intensely by the unborn children, “whether it be bleeding to death following dismemberment (dilation and evacuation abortion) or dying by salt poisoning in the amniotic sac.” Babies feel all of it with unmedicated hyperintensity. Micah’s family makes their stand for the Pain Cable Act so babies in situations like Micah’s are given the chance for a life. The author also states in their final paragraphs that “Anyone who claims to be pro-science ought to pay heed to the Pain Capable Act. The bill highlights what science tells us about life in utero and affirms the unborn as unique and distinct human beings, capable of suffering.” The Act Protects lives that are able to feel the pain of an abortion. A. The "Third Trimester Abortions Should Be Viewed as Immoral." Abortion, edited by James D. Torr, Greenhaven Press, 2006. Opposing Viewpoints. Originally published as "What Neither Side Wants You to Know." Abortion and Brain Waves," New Republic, 31 Jan. 2000, p. 21. The author states in the opening of the article that many pro-abortion members and the majority of the general public believe babies cannot feel pain, are not complex, and do not respond like a normal human would, all based on “science”. In the last 15 years, new research has been done on the topic of abortion that was not able to be performed during the initial ruling of Roe vs. Wade in 1973. Scientific developments in abortions, especially late term, have seriously expanded what doctors can measure in babies and how they show signs of life in the womb. One way was through connecting premature babies to EGG scanners, which show great amounts of complex brain activity, very similar to that of babies born on time. The author claims that, “doctors found that the fetus is aware of touch, responds to sound, shows a hormonal stress reaction, and exhibits other qualities associated with mental awareness.” All of the above are signs of life and are a result of complex brain activity, which is believed to begin in the second and third trimesters.
