Imperialism is an extension of another nation ruling over other countries and/or lands. It’s also sometimes like a puppet state where the country really doesn't have any choice but to follow their rulers (Britain, France, Germany, etc.). instructions, making them puppets. Latin America was one of these continents affected by imperialism. Spain and Portugal ruled most, if not all, of Latin America and surrounding islands. The elite from Spain and Portugal who were there in Latin America were called peninsulars. Latin America was indirectly ruled due to it being pretty far from their rulers' countries and also the peninsulars being there temporarily as in the book it says “...resided temporarily in Latin America for political and economic gain..” …show more content…
This interference began to lead to a number of Latin Americans calling the United States the big bully from the north. Some of the occupations would last for decades, like in Haiti and Nicaragua. Cuba was also a very main part of the occupation too, as it says in the text “As a result of the Spanish American war (1898), Cuba became a United States protectorate.” ( Spielvogel, p.458). This would continue for over a century, with the Cold War being another huge part, but not very important to an imperialist American view. In conclusion, I think Imperialism can be a good thing, but always ends badly or is just bad. The only country I can think of that enjoyed their rulers is French Guiana, which is to this day still in control of France. Imperialist colonies are kinda like communist countries, none of them ever being successful, and if they were, it would lead to a revolution, never having long term control and falling apart, becoming a new country. They may have been a very bad example, but I'm just saying that if the system seems or is unfair to the people, then a revolution is bound to happen (Imperialism, Communism, Facism, one man dictatorship,
