Hypothesis:
test 1 and 2: I if test to see how fire resistant baby pajamas are by washing a different strip x number of times and timing to see how long it takes for it to catch on fire, then I predict that the clothing that was washed zero (0) times will take the longest to catch fire; thus making it the most fire resistant.
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to test how many times washing baby pajamas it will take until the garment of clothing is completely broken down and catches fire the quickest. The information collected from these experiments can give parents and future parents an idea of how much they should be putting their child’s clothing in the washing machine.
Materials:
1 pair of baby pajamas (that are labeled as “fire resistant”)
Liquid butane/liquid lighter
A hair dryer (for test 1)
Water
detergent tweezers Bowl spoon Ruler
Marker
Fabric scissors
A stopwatch/ timer
Procedure:
Test 1:
1. Lay the baby pajamas on a flat surface
2. Using the ruler, measure five 3x3 inches of clothing, use the marker to draw the lines
3. Use the scissors to cut along the lines made
4. Each square has a specific number of times it should be washed.
Square 1 should not be washed and not put in the “dryer” (hair dryer)
Square 2 should be washed 5 times and dried using the hair dryer until it feels completely dry
Square 3 should be washed 10 times and dried till it feels dry
Square 4 should be washed 15 times and dried till it feels dry
Square 5 should be washed 20 times and dried till it feels dry
5. After the washing and drying process is completed, start the lighter.
6. Using the tweezers, grab a corner of the first square you will test.
7. Hold the square about a half of an inch above the flame. At this moment, start your timer and stop it when the square catches fire.
8. Record your results.
9. Continue to repeat steps 5-9 with the other squares.
Test 2:
1. Repeat the same steps in 1-4, but after washing the squares that need to be washed, DO NOT DRY THEM, let each square AIR DRY COMPLETELY.
2. Repeat the same steps 5-8 as shown in Test 1.
How to wash squares:
1. Measure 1 cup of water and pour into the bowl.
2. Measure 2 teaspoons of detergent and pour into the same bowl as the water.
3. Stir the two ingredients together.
4. Place
