What this paper and the critics selected for exploration have in common is the focus on Lancelot’s and Guinevere’s relationship within “Le Morte d’Arthur”. This paragraph is dedicated to summarizing the central claims of the critics. Having an clear understanding of the critic’s central claim is crucial to understanding their logic and theories. The first author to note is named Vern Bullough. Bullough’s article is titled “Medieval Concepts of Adultery” and is different from the other three articles. Where Bullough’s article differs from the other critics is regarding the fact it is not a critique of Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur”. Although adultery differed in judgment and punishment depending on the culture, overall adultery would lead to condemnation. The second article this paper will explore is written by Karen Cherewatuk, which is a more traditional critique of “Le Morte d’Arthur”. Cherewatuk article is titled “Malory’s Lancelot and the Language of Sin and Confession”. Cherewatuk’s article discusses Lancelot’s conflict regarding his love for Guinevere and his relationship to God, and the Christian religion. Cherewatuk’s understanding of the character of Lancelot is one of sin and confliction, but through confession, he earns his salvation into heaven. The importance of Cherewatuk’s article is that it underlines the flaws and sins of Lancelot adulterous relationship with Guinevere, but justifies his acceptance into heaven through the Christian means of confession. Whereas the next two authors justify Lancelot’s acceptance through his actions, Cherewatuk justifies his acceptance through religious means. The final two authors are the most critical to this paper, being that this paper will primarily focus on their arguments and
