As we step into the steamy gym on an early saturday night you can feel the need to win throughout the premise. You look to your left and to you right and you are surrounded by not only your teammates, but your best friends. As the team gets in a huddle the other captains and myself stand in the middle and talk the team through what we need to remember in the round. Before taking the mat we all yell the powerful words that we yell before each round, “WE CAN, WE WILL, JUST BELIEVE IT” the team yells as we start to rush to the end of the mat. As the judges say “South Lyon Varsity you may take the mat” the nerves start to kick in. While setting up you can feel the energy on the floor, as everyone finishes up you can see Coach K and Coach Megan standing at the top of the judges tables with the excitement on their faces ready to see all their hard work pay off. I scream ‘SET’ and everyone prepares for the round to start. I have been coaching in this program for four consecutive years now and I love it. When coaching, I am in charge of thirty or more girls at one time. Another way my leadership skills have been shown is through cheerleading in the high school. I have been on the varsity cheer team since my freshman year and I have just been nominated the captain of the team this season. Cheer has made me into a very vivacious person. To gain the team’s respect you have to show that you're a leader not a follower. You also need to lead by example not through telling.
