Leadership and Narcissism
Leadership attracts people with narcissist traits because although narcissist are often viewed as arrogant, haughty, and self-centered, they are very confident in their abilities, willing to take bold risks, and persistent in their pursuit of goals despite adversity (Owens, et al., 2015). Many of the past articles and studies have focused on business leaders toxic and otherwise, but examples of overt narcissism are seen in sports, politics, and other professions (Owens, at al., 2015).

At times of great change in our world narcissistic traits in leadership can be useful (Maccoby, 2004). Business leaders such as Jack Welch, Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, Bill Gates, and Steve Jobs were among the most effective narcissists (Maccoby, 2004). They were able to be charmers and engage passionate followers with their rhetoric (Maccoby, 2004). Steve Jobs had a high degree of confidence in his actions and decisions. His narcissistic traits were some of the reasons he was pushed out of Apple in 1985. He returned in 1996 when Apple bought his current company Pixar (Owens, et al., 2015). In 1997, Steve Jobs began his second term as leader at Apple. In his second term, he effectively changed his narcissistic leadership style by tempering it with humility (Owens, et al., 2015). Traditional psychotherapy may not be effective on all patients with NPD. Patients may have difficulty engaging with and seeing results from the psychotherapy (Sperry & Sperry, 2016). There are no current medications to specifically treat NPD. Other alternatives to psychotherapy include psychoeducation, treatment of substance abuse, and relaxation and stress management (Sperry & Sperry, 2016). If the NPD patient presents with multiple mental health issues recent research has found that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is another course of treatment that may be effective (Sperry & Sperry, 2016). The majority of research on NPD treatment has focused on traditional psychotherapy. Although recent research has shown CBT leads to symptom reduction in NPD individuals with a dual diagnosis, more research needs to be done to validate CBT and other treatment options as viable alternatives (Sperry & Sperry, 2016). A potential study design could include more specific longitudinal studies on the efficacy of CBT and stress management techniques for NPD. These studies would involve randomly selected NPD patients with and without dual diagnosis, 50-50 gender composition, and tailored therapy
