According to Northhouse (2013), the skills approach and its inventory assessment was designed to measure three comprehensive styles of leadership skills. Those leadership skills are technical, human and conceptual. Having technical skills would allow the leader to have understanding and expertise in a certain expanse. Human skills shows that the leader have the ability to work and communicate with people. Whereas conceptual skills shows the leader’s capability to work with thoughts and concepts (Northhouse, 2013). After completing the skills inventory, my scores interpretation was in the high range with technical skills at 30, human skills at 26, and conceptual skills at 26. According to Northhouse (2013), these scores can determine where my leadership weakness and strengths are and the areas that need development. In addition, these scores can infer which level of management I may be best well-suited. Northhouse (2013) discussed how these skills are required and needed in different levels of management. However, when it comes to conceptual and relationship skills, I need some development in those areas in order to become a more effective leader. Reflecting on a quiz I recently participated in, indicated my leadership style is both participative and delegative. When applying the characteristics of the style and skills approach to my personal leadership styles, my human skills shows I have the ability to work and communicate with people.
