This quote shows the fear Sheerin was facing as he was put through the tunnel. “There’s always the abort switch though. But suppose it doesn’t work? What if I press it and the lights don’t come on. In the novel The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart, Merlin, the protagonist, fears the unknown in the beginning of the novel. From the start, he feared Camlach for he attempted to poison him by feeding him a spiked fruit. After this incident, he went to Galapas who taught him to use the art of seeing the near future. From learning this magic, he is able to neutralize his emotion of fear. This is because the magic taught to him removes the aspect of his future being unknown. Some of the ways individuals can deal with fear is to hope an event will happen in their favor. An event that neutralizes fear itself. Such as the survivor in Left for Dead that hoped that the next day is when he would be rescued. Another way individuals deal with fear is to protect their reputation or how they look to other people. For example in Nightfall, Sheerin didn’t want to succumb to the fear that was consuming him on board the tunnel ride because at the same time he feared what other people would think of him.
