The acknowledgment of existing frameworks like this allowed early American leaders to adapt these systems to better meet the needs of a diverse population. Throughout colonial times, the British established administrative structures with the primary goal of maintaining control over the colonies. However, after America gained independence, these methods ended up serving as the basis for its own democratic government and public administration. In essence, America modified the British structure to better fit its own democratic values. Some argue that the consequences of British colonialism, particularly the introduction of practices like indentured servitude and slavery, created social inequality in America that persists to this day. For decades, American society has been divided by the institutions and laws imposed by the British, particularly those dealing with slavery and indentured servitude.
