Samuel de Champlain “The Father of New France” was a skilled sailor and mapmaker. Champlain is important to Canadian history for being the first European to explore the Great Lakes region, helping with the creation of the French settlement, Port Royal, and creating the French settlement of Quebec. Champlain started to explore North America with his uncle François Gravé Du Pont. He mapped out and described the Great Lakes region. In 1604, Champlain assisted with the creation of the first European settlement, Port Royal. Champlain continued to explore North America until 1608 when he created the settlement now known as Quebec.
