The universe is large and mostly unknown. As we get curious and as our needs get more complex, we feel the need to explore. Explorations over time have helped us discover new territories where we can find answers to our needs and questions. Through exploration by courageous men and women, our overall quality of life has improved. In sea exploration one prominent explorer was Leif Erikson who was the first European to find North America. Leif Erikson was a Viking who is famous for being the first European to ever land in North America, creating a settlement in “Vinland” and converting to and spreading Christianity in Greenland. According to early records of Erikson’s voyages, he did not mean to discover North America. It is also possible that he was blown off-course while on his way to Greenland to spread Christianity. Samuel de Champlain “The Father of New France” was a skilled sailor and mapmaker. Champlain is important to Canadian history for being the first European to explore the Great Lakes region, helping with the creation of the French settlement, Port Royal, and creating the French settlement of Quebec. Champlain started to explore North America with his uncle François Gravé Du Pont. He mapped out and described the Great Lakes region. In 1604, Champlain assisted with the creation of the first European settlement, Port Royal. Champlain continued to explore North America until 1608 when he created the settlement now known as Quebec. While exploring, Champlain also created trade companies that shipped fur to France. Overall, Samuel de Champlain is important in the history of Canada and France.
