He throws himself down the stairs while Greg makes eerie noises to scare off the thugs. Clearly, a similar conflict is present in both stories—the characters must protect themselves and the people around them. In “The Dinner Party,” the text states, “The American comes to with a start. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing—bait for a snake… His first impulse is to jump back and warn the others, but he knows the commotion would frighten the cobra into striking.
