While in preparation for this last writing assignment, I looked back on one of the first assignments I completed for this class. I was optimistic, looking forward to a new class that will help my writing abilities sound stronger and more knowledgeable to an audience. While I enjoy rambling my thoughts into a document to get my point across, I knew I wasn’t the greatest at it. Grammar was all over the place, my vocabulary could’ve used some work, I didn’t know how to properly cite a quote or work cited page, and I’ve never written at a college level in my life. Lennie Irvin’s ‘What Is “Academic” Writing?’ at the beginning of the semester and I still agree with what he expressed. I followed his tips for writing, even when I didn’t know what I was doing while writing for a hobby. Writing academically has a frightening ring to it, it’s nothing else other than explaining one’s ideas to a target audience. In Irvin’s essay, he states, “Your success with academic writing depends upon how well you understand what you are doing as you write and then how you approach the writing task” (16). In their essay, they go over many types of ways to better prepare students on how to approach different writing tasks by jotting down their points and facts and then writing their hearts out to their audience. As the student looks back on their writing, they can add changes to sound more professional with their grammar, punctuation, and formatting. Another essay written by E. Shelley Reid, titled, ‘Ten Ways to Think about Writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing Students’ expresses similar ideas to that of Irvin’s essay. Their writing goes beyond the stress of attempting to write within the realm of following the assignment rules. Written then loses its passion and creative ideas for the topic at
