Lennie Irvin’s ‘What Is “Academic” Writing?’ at the beginning of the semester and I still agree with what he expressed. I followed his tips for writing, even when I didn’t know what I was doing while writing for a hobby. Writing academically has a frightening ring to it, it’s nothing else other than explaining one’s ideas to a target audience. In Irvin’s essay, he states, “Your success with academic writing depends upon how well you understand what you are doing as you write and then how you approach the writing task” (16). In their essay, they go over many types of ways to better prepare students on how to approach different writing tasks by jotting down their points and facts and then writing their hearts out to their audience. As the student looks back on their writing, they can add changes to sound more professional with their grammar, punctuation, and formatting. Another essay written by E. Shelley Reid, titled, ‘Ten Ways to Think about Writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing Students’ expresses similar ideas to that of Irvin’s essay.
