Not that Pointer Sister, but Gainey said she loved to do needle point work in earlier years. Born in Detroit Michigan in May 1927, then Leola Massey, never knew the road she would travel would lead her to West Palm Beach, Florida and the Gamma Gamma Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated. After her formal education at then Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia she went on to complete college at Allen University in South Carolina. Gainey declared, “I didn’t understand their tongue! It was geechee,” as she chuckled, referring to the native and distinct dialect of many South Carolinians. After college, Gainey got married and the couple soon adopted their precious son. While not quite being able to recall some of the many songs she would sing during her membership process, Gainey and her line sisters were affectionately known as “The Singing Grandmas”. As she recalled her life, Gainey said her life has taught her to always live by the Golden Rule.
As Gainey, a world traveler, slowly reached over to her blue and gold scrapbook, she recalled, “I was a country girl” as she remembered her trips to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Cuba, and Paris.
While we sat, Gainey remembered her needle point as she jumped up from her seat to retrieve a purse she made. The royal blue and gold needle point purse which bears the distinct letters of Sigma Gamma Rho was still in good condition.
