Leonard Victor Koenig: A Short Story

I had the pleasure of interviewing Leonard Victor Koenig on October 31, 2017. Leonard currently lives in the Veteran’s Home located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. I happened to visit the veteran’s home on the afternoon of Halloween. The veterans in the building were full of energy and were having a large party to celebrate. The workers were dressed in adorable costumes and so were the veterans. When I was introduced to Leonard, he greeted me with a large, warm smile. Although Leonard had a giant orange bucket that had all sorts of chocolate candy in it, he did not have a costume on. Before Leonard would allow me to start interviewing him he insisted I took a few pieces of Halloween candy.
Leonard shares a comfortable sized room with another gentleman his age that he seemed to get along great with. As I visited Leonard, he joked around with his roommate quite a bit. Leonard and his roommate each had a side of the room to themselves. Leonard had the right side and his roommate had the left side. His wedding was in the year 1948 and he was twenty-two years old. Leonard had the honor of marrying a lovely woman named Alaine who was eighteen years old. Leonard described Alaine as being beautiful woman but very jealous. Leonard and Alaine were blessed with two children. Their children’s names were Larry and Terry and they were a couple years apart. Leonard said that raising his children was the best phase in his life. He said that Alaine and his favorite thing to do was celebrate the holidays with his children. Leonard said they especially enjoyed celebrating Christmas and Easter because there were more activities to do with the children. Alaine suddenly died at the age of fifty, and Leonard unfortunately never had the opportunity to say
