Renaissance period that emerged in Italy in the late 14th century, immediately following the Middle Ages. The most known representatives of this period were the Italian masters: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael.
The true genius, Leonardo da Vinci, developed his art and sculpting skills in Florence. When he left Florence, Leonardo worked for the Duke of Milan as a designer, and later, he served the King of France for the rest of his life. Leonardo was never bound to one place. Even though his notebook proves that Leonardo had some understanding of the world and human body, it also shows that Leonardo had an infinite hunger for knowledge. He was not only an artist and a sculptor, but also a scientist. The notebook of Leonardo was filled with his sketches of the movement of water, fetus in the womb, the motion of birds in flight, and the circulation of blood. Leonardo’s interest in the anatomy of human body and mathematics of nature resulted on a valuable sketch been produced. The drawing showed how a human body produced a perfect geometry of the circle

Unlike Botticelli, Leonardo made the background and the foreground of the painting more complex. Also, Leonardo conveys the symbolic meaning of light and dark. Infant John the Baptist, the Virgin Mary, an angel, and the Christ Child present in the foreground of the painting. The Renaissance often used the triangle, that was present in the Leonardo’s painting, as a compositional technique. The mysterious landscape on the background conveys the concept of infinity of time and horizont. Leonardo used sfumato, the technique that includes making the outline slightly blurred, to create the hazy aura. He used the same technique in his famous painting of Mona Lisa. This technique imitates human vision. It was Leonardo’s own variation of the chiaroscuro technique, that was developed by the Renaissance
