In his poetry he uses jazz and Black folk rhythms. He ignored the classical forms in favor of the Black culture. He was inspired by his grandmother.
In his poem “Let America Be America Again” is about the difference about his hopes for America and the reality of how the real world is really. Like when he says “I am the Negro bearing slavery’s scars. I am the red man driven from the land.” Back then African Americans use to recieve beat if they didn’t follow the rules given by their “master”, which were white americans.
