I have chosen to write a letter from Helen to her father the day before her death. I did this to show Helen’s personality. She is deeply religious and loves God. But she also has a strong friendship with Jane Eyre. As the book is in Jane’s perspective, Helen’s thoughts and feeling are not always shown. I thought it would be interesting to write in her point of view.
I referenced events in the book and things that Helen had said. For example, I mentioned how Mr. Brocklehurst called Jane a liar. I slightly rewrote what Helen said in the book, such as when she said that she was happy to die young because she would escape great suffering.
I made sure that the letter reflected Helen’s religious values. Helen valued religion greatly, so she was unhappy to disobey God. In the book, Helen tended to tell Jane about God. So it was likely that Helen wanted Jane to be religious.
The audience of the letter is Helen’s father. In the book, Helen mentions that “I have only a father; and he is lately married, and will not miss me.” Since Helen believes that her father will not miss or care about her, it would not make sense for her to try to comfort her father. However, I cannot follow Him as well as I should. Sometimes the pain done to me is too much to bear. Once, after I had been punished by Miss Scatcherd for not cleaning my nails, I could not help but let out a tear. She simply desired to correct my many faults, I know this to be true, but the pain was so great, that I lost myself for a moment. Love and forgiveness left my heart, and I despaired. To not forgive is to go against God’s will. Instantly, I knew that I had wronged. I tried to not stray from His teachings, but something changed. I gained a reason to want to stay in this
