Geography and philosophy have influenced American History in many diverse ways. One instance that highlights the relationship between geography and ideas is the Expedition of Lewis and Clark. The key ideologies displayed in their expedition were, human curiosity, acquisition of national resources and westward expansion. This expedition was heavily influenced by the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, the Rocky Mountains, and the Pacific coast. In 1803 when Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory he then approached Meriwether Lewis and asked him to lead the expedition. After long periods of preparation and education Lewis invited William Clark to be the co-leader of the expedition with him. The propose of the expedition was to discover a water route to the Pacific by way of the Missouri River. This journey would take them up rivers, over mountains, and across plains in search of a route from the Atlantic to Pacific ocean.
The most important ideology that the expedition possessed was human curiosity. This ideology was so important because not only was it the main reason why the expedition was so thorough it is also one of the fundamental things that sets us apart from animals. During their 2 year expedition the Corps of Discovery recorded many new species of flora and fauna, new geographical features, large tracts of farmable land and many Indian tribes. Although the expedition did not find a route from the Atlantic to Pacific that would enable trade the expedition was declared a success. The three ideologies that influenced the expedition were, the acquisition of natural resources, westward expansion and human curiosity.
