Regardless if you were born an American or applied and received American citizenship, you are priviledged with your own rights covered under the American Constitution. Unfortunately, this is not the case for all countries who are given the freedoms that are freely bestowed to Americans. The first amendment listed in the American Constitution is our freedom to express our opinions and beliefs, whether it is verbal, written, or by actions. Libel, being one of the unprotected speeches is described as publishing false statements to damage someone’s reputation. In today’s society, it is more difficult to be convicted of libel because of the elements needed to have a libel cast. He’s most famous for the publication of Histriomastix, which was a verbal attack on Charles I and his queen. Later on, Prynne’s declared women actors as “notorious whores” directing it to the Queen who was participating in a performance. He was trialed and was found guilty for attempting to influence people to rebel against the monarchy, and was sentenced to life in prison and had his ear chopped off. This still didn’t stop him from writing attacks on the Anglican church and smuggling them out to get published. After being caught once again, the rest of what was left of his ear was sliced off, his nose was slit and the letters SL which stood for “seditious libeler” was branded into his cheek. He continued making pamphlets attacking different groups and people, later on Prynee was elected to be a member of the Parliament, which he ended up attending Charles I execution. I really don’t approve of them cutting his ear off and slitting his nose but in the days of monarchy and having the fear of your kingdom rebel, I think he should have been put in jail.
