Telling your kids what you make will help bring them to reality with how much money it takes to live in the real world. Ron Lieber provides a variety of angles on possible outcomes if parents do/don’t tell their kids how much they spend in his article “Why You Should Tell Your Kids How Much You Make.” Lieber proves his point with multiple examples of real-life happenings such as Trisha Jones, a mother of 2, sending her kids to private school and making them sit down with her to pay their tuition bills. Kids learning how much their parents make could possibly be “one of the most valuable lessons of their childhood,” (Lieber). However, Lieber does not specifically answer why parents should tell the kids exactly how much money they make a year. It is not necessary to tell children the exact amount the parents’ salaries consist of. On the other hand, it is very important for kids to know how much necessities cost. For example, how much a house, rent, car payment, or college tuition are all important expenses that kids should be prepared for.
In conclusion, Lieber’s article brings up great points and ideas for teaching children about money. Lieber provides examples of ways to teach children lessons about expenses. Some experts suggest to start teaching lessons on money to children as young as the age of five. However, the title, “Why You Should Tell Your Kids How Much You Make,” is not relevant to the main point of the article.
