In 2013 a documentary named Blackfish sparked an uproar showcasing Tilikum (an orca whale) who killed three trainers while being held in captivity at SeaWorld and the suffering these animals endure in the confinement of such small tanks. Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) also has a campaign against the amusement park SeaWorld based on the living environments of orca whales stating, “Wild orcas are known to swim as far as 100 miles per day, while the orcas at SeaWorld swim endless circles in small barren concrete tanks” (SeaWorldOfHurt 2016). Their concern seems legitimate. But I ask you, why isn’t there an uproar when the same treatment/abuse is being applied to humans. In prisons all across the United States adults as well as adolescents are being placed in small confined rooms for twenty-three hours every day for weeks even months at a time in solitary confinement. …show more content…
Significance/Statement/Justification
In a video documentary, Life in Solitary, produced by Dan Edge on October 9, 2015, former Rikers correction officer, Lorenzo Steele Jr makes a valid statement identifying being locked in an 8ft x 6ft cell for 23 hours and questioning the true purpose of solitary confinement versus trying to mentally break a person. Being kept in isolation impedes the shaping of self-concept.
