The topic of my paper is to compare working conditions, solidarity among workers, and owner attitudes in both New England cotton mills and Life in the Iron Mills. In terms of Life in the Iron Mills, I want to specifically address the moment when Hugh describes his sculpture to Kirby and the town doctor. Initially, the doctor interpreted the groping as, “clutching: the peculiar action of a man dying of thirst” (Davis). Besides the fact that he could not analyze the true meaning of the piece of art; he approached Hugh in hopes of learning the true meaning. Hugh replied with three simple words, “she be hungry” (Davis). His answer was so simple, but it had much more meaning behind it than just the biological response to feeling hunger. The piece
