God has always existed, but created the world and all that is in it for His own glory. God didn't need to create us, but He desired to share His life with others. In Genesis, we are told the story of creation and how man came into existence. God took seven days to create the world and began by creating lightness and darkness. Next he continued to create sky and sea, land and vegetation, stars and moon, sea creatures, animals, and on the seventh day he rested. In particular, man, being created in God’s image, was created to have fellowship with God. Man was created to glorify God through his mind, heart, and will.
