In her belief, Lillian thinks love in a marriage has its difficulties, even if it endures verbal/physical abuse. It is important for her (core value) that her family stays together; which in turn, makes her give excuses for Bull’s behavior. She would easily blame Bull’s career in the military and their marital disputes (disciplining the children) for his violent behavior. A good example of when Lillian excused Bull’s temper, is when she told her son Ben that he needs to realize that their father has always been under a great deal of pressure from his job and from his superior officers. For Lillian tried her best to avoid Bull’s temper to rise with her and the children, when she was able to. There are at times she denies the abuse has occurred and then there are times where she claims she will leave him. A good example of her confusion was when she told Ben that she would leave Bull one day due to his abuse and then shortly she claims he has never hit her in the entire married life. Not only does she dismiss the reality of the abuse within her marriage, she also dismisses it with her children, especially with Ben as well. For instance, after Ben confessed how many times his father had physically abused him for two years, Lillian accused her son of over exaggerating about those incidents.
