What happened at Quinton is something I will not soon forget. I qualified for the Regionals Tournament in Lincoln Douglas Debate. You qualify in an event for Regionals by getting the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place medal in that event. I was able to win the spot for 2nd place. Lincoln Douglas, or LD if you prefer, is a debate in which morality is involved. At this tournament, the topic was “A just government ought to require employers pay a living wage”. There are two people debating the topic in each room. On the first day there is only one judge, but if you make it to the second day then there will be three judges. For me this accomplishment was even more special then it would be normally. It was so special because I had gone through a lot to get there. Qualifying for Regionals had been a process of over four different tournaments. The first two tournaments were over presumed consent of organ procurement. The first tournament was an utter failure. The second tournament was even worse because I got farther than ever before. I thought I was debating for 1st or 2nd, but I was actually debating for 3rd or 4th place. Unfortunately, I lost that round and realized in horror at the Award time that I wasn’t going to qualify there. I did somewhat well at the tournament over the right to be forgotten in Europe, but I still did not qualify. It took so long and I went through a lot of disappointment, so getting to do this was a dream come true. Getting to see the shine of the silver medal was absolutely breathtaking. This may sound quite dramatic to most people, especially if you have never seen an LD round take place. The first reason I was so excited was because that was the last qualifying tournament that year. Meaning, if I didn’t do it now, I was going to have to wait till next year if I messed up here. This also meant that I was finally going to be able to show all of those that didn’t think debate really meant anything. Especially, those people that thought I was that one debater that wasn’t going to amount to anything in my
