Lion Trophy Hunting Lions are one of the world’s most majestic animals. With their overwhelming size and known as “king of the jungle”, lions are truly breath taking. However, some people are murdering these grand animals. Lion trophy hunting is wrong because people are killing these amazing animals, they might be the cause for their extinction, and because it is said that hunting these animals is a very expensive sport, where is all of the money going? Hunters are killing lions at a rapid rate. In the article, “Shameful Sport”, by Melissa Cronin, talks about how an American dentist quickly became the most hated dentist within a matter of a day after killing a known lion in Africa named Cecil (“Shameful Sport”). Cronin argues that the lion population is rapidly decreasing (“Shameful Sport”). Cronin mentions, “A century ago, there were some 200,000 African lions prowling the savannah. Now, according to the last complete assessment in 2012, there are as few as 32,000 left, living on less than 20 percent of the land they used to roam”(par. 5). According to Cronin, trophy hunting has in fact increased over the recent decades in the southern and eastern parts of the continent. Cronin also mentions, “Lion hunts were banned from 2005 to 2008, after scientists warned that hunting had hurt the population” (par. 7). In an article by Luke Hunter, named “How to Save the Lions”, mentions how “we are losing an iconic species in most of its range” (par. 1). Hunter mentions, “Only two centuries ago, hundreds of thousands of lions inhabited Africa. Today there are perhaps 20,000 of the big cats, living in 8 percent of their former range” (par. 1). Killing these animals will have an effect in the end; hunters will be the cause of their extinction if they are not stopped
