Lionel Messi was born on June 24, 1987 in Rosario, Argentina. Soccer had been his passion since he started walking and by the time he was five, he played for a local club coached by his father. In 1995 he switch to Newell’s Old Boys play, and from that point forward he was known as “The Machine of 87.” Messi was diagnosed with a hormone deficiency that restricted his growth at the age of 11. Soccer was still his passion, but it was harder for him to get accepted to other teams that were better for him. No one wanted him on their teams because he was short. His medications were at $900 a month and his parents were getting to the point where they couldn’t afford it. Even though he had great talent, no club offered to pay for the treatment he needed. Everywhere I went I was judged, no one accepted me or even tried to help me when I needed it the most. That’s when I found my passion for soccer. It was my safe place, my hideaway… just like Messi. I looked up to him in so many ways that I can’t even explain. Things started going worse so I just stopped caring, everyday afterschool I went straight to the backyard, taking out all of my feelings on the ball.
