Malcolm X's main literacy sponsor was himself. Yes, prison was the place he had access to books that helped him,but it was his own curiosity that lead him to gain the education he disparately searched for. The prison institution had intentionally provided books for the prisoners to either keep them company or to help them advance their education. However, it was up to the prisoners to use these resources to gain something useful or use them to pass time. In Malcolm case he seized this opportunity to educate himself.
