Analytical Essay – “The Yellow Wallpaper” Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” was written in 1892. The contrast between the women’s writing and the pattern of the wallpaper exposes women’s confinement and emotional condition because her role in society is limited during the 19th century. Examining these traits has often caused the story to be seen as a feminist short story. The Gilman explains that she begins to write her thoughts secretly in her notebook behind John’s back. The notebook represents the narrator’s sanity when she is trapped by him. Her emotional condition became worse because John keeps dismissing his wife’s thoughts and suggestions, so she started to mark her feeling in her notebook privately. John does not like her writing: “I must put this away – he hates to have me write a word” (270). This statement represents …show more content…
“I do not like to look out of the windows even-there are so many of those creeping women, and they creep so fast. I wonder if they all come out of that wall-paper as I did?” (278).This statement reveals that the narrator knows that there are so many women behind the pattern were an image of her. The woman inside the wallpaper is now free and two women have become one. Because she tries to free an imaginary woman from the wallpaper it shows us that she also wants to get to freedom from the room and also from her illness. John never allows her to talk with any person or go outside the house so now she is not under control of any one. Narrator feelings of untrammeled shows in: “I’ve pulled of most of the paper, so you can’t put me back!” (279).
