The story "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edger Allen Poe tells the story of a man named Montresor who seeks revenge for an insult from another named Fortunato. The type of revenge that Montresor seeks however is revenge that is planned and free of consequence. In fact Montresor has been planning his revenge for some time and has waited until the perfect moment to carry it out. Montresor explains that on countless times Fortunato has insulted him. In the story Poe uses many words to describe the setting of the story and make us feel as if we can see the wine cellar and the characters in his story. In the begining of the story we get a sense of the personality of Fortunato that Poe is conveying to us. Fortunato is drunk and very arrogant like he is very unpleasent to be around. He tells Montresor that he doesn't believe he has this rare cask of wine in a very condescending way. Fortunato is also very insistant when Montresor tells him that he doesn't want to impose upon to assess the wine. When Montresor gives Fortunato a drink to get him more drunk, Fortunato makes toast of the buried that reposed around them, meaning the dead family of Montresor that reside in the catacombs. At this moment Fortunato makes note of the vault commenting that its extensive as they passed through long walls of piled skelentons and barrels. Montresor says " the nitre!" "see it increases and hangs like moss" and the see drops of moisture trickling among the bones. Continuing through the vault they walk through ranges of low arches and descending to a foulness in the air that cause the torches to glow.
