Charles Bukowski is one of Americas best acknowledged writers of poetry and writing, and many would say he is a well-known inspiring and imitated poet. Bukowski was an alcoholic womanizer who died in 1994; he lived in Los Angeles, California for fifty years. His style of writing was astute, down to earth, realistic, autobiographical fiction. Implementing all of those things to Hank Moody. I was allured into Californication almost instantaneously especially after finding similarities to Bukowski. It is there where he gathered most of his inspirations from. The belief that in Caifornication, Hank Moody is based off of Bukowski is almost transparent. The narration takes place in Los Angeles, he is a successful author, with a drinking problem, and he never fails to cause problems or drama. After reading some of Bukowski’s work, I can see the similarities are all based in the spontaneous craziness. Although some of Bukowski’s writing is explicit and out there, the show fails to bring out the logical genius that is Charles Bukowski was. While the underground press was instrumental in turning Charles Bukowski into a popular figure in the alternative publishing scene in the late 1960s, its relevance in Bukowski's early career has been largely overlooked. During the show I feel like they put things there for you to catch and once you do you it all starts making sense, they show you without actually telling you.
