THE BLACK DEATH
The first sign of the Plague which is, also known as the
“Black Death” occurred in
1347 in
Europe. The
Plague was so catastrophic in a three year span it was able to whip out a third of the country.
This event became such an interesting topic due to the decimating population going into the late middle ages. The
Plague was so deadly it was able to change the

KNOWN FIGURES
“The artistic expression at the time mirrored people’s personal experience with death” (Medrano-Cabral). Artist in the Middle Ages took such a tragic event and turned their pain into art work. Artist such as, Hieronymus
Bosch, Arnold Bocklin, Ligier Richier and many more were able to use how they seen the tragic scarcity and paint a picture of it. Religion became such a big deal since the people believed that God was punishing the people with the plague. This allowed artist to express art work such as, painting of Saint Rosalie interceding for the Plague-striken of Palermo by
Van Dyck’s. One famous literature piece written to reflect the plague is “A
Journal of the Plague Year” by Daniel Defoe. Many other literature pieces exist through out the time and after the event took place.
