I think that each level of law enforcement all the way from local to federal, they have similar functions. Functions include enforcing criminal prohibitions; maintaining public order and security, conducting investigations of crimes, performing proper searches and seizures, making arrests of persons suspected of crimes and interrogating suspects. I believe that six functions are the basic ground rules or guidelines to carrying out each level efficiently. What that means is protection from the county police happens locally and it their job to serve and protect. That’s one of their main rules to live by. If you don’t serve and protect for your city, state or country then why would you be a police officer or seek employment with law enforcement? Also it is their job to patrol highways and supply skilled technical support to local agencies.
When we think about state law enforcement agencies, we should immediately start thinking about state police, highway patrollers and investigative agencies. Those three fall in one category. The state police according to the textbook say “are defined as having statewide police powers for both traffic regulation and criminal investigations” (Katz pg 75). In a nutshell that means they have control over basically everything in that state. Highway Patrol has basically one job and that is to enforce traffic policies and arrest and state investigative agencies responsibilities are limited with access to lab
