The 1989 Loma Prieta quake made California realize that earthquake regulations need to be drastically updated. In response to the Loma Prieta quake in 1989 the California Seismic Hazards Mapping act of 1990 was passed; this act forces the California Geological survey (CGS) to identify and map areas that are likely to be damaged during an earthquake. The maps created by the CGS are used by cities to find points of liquification and landslide prone areas.
