She sighs and watches her breath catch against the window, then does it six more times. When that gets boring, she starts fiddling with the radio, never settling on a station for more than five seconds.
“Relax, Nora,” Jill says, turning the radio off. “Trust me when I say this is a great school. You’re going to love it.”
Nora scoffs. “No offense, but how would you know?”
“I just do okay,” Jill sighs. The GPS announces that they’re less than half a mile from their destination.

They pass a brick sign that reads [SCHOOL NAME HERE]. They drive past manicured fields surrounded by trees, shielding the campus from the rest of the world. To her right, Nora sees a couple of buildings and there’s a large crowd of students gathered in front of it.
At that moment, it occurs to her that she’ll be sharing a room with another girl. Another mutant girl. Nora bites her lip. She has never met another mutant before. She’s never even seen one in person. What if this girl stays up late and never wants to clean up after herself? What if her roommate uses her powers on her? Nora has very little control over her powers. She would never be able to fight back.
Lost in her worries, Nora doesn’t notice that Jill has parked the car on the curb beside yet another brick building with large windows that take up most of the wall on each side. The car idles for a few more minutes before Jill finally
