Time moves in one direction and memory in another. Memories are recollections of things that happened in the past. Everyone has memories weather good or bad stored in their minds. As people age it becomes harder and harder to recall certain memories. Although, in everyone no matter the age true total recall of an invent in the past is highly unlikely. There are a few reasons of this including the misinformation effect and false memory syndrome.
Memory retrieval problems can be affected by misinformation effect and false memory syndrome. The misinformation effect is false information that usually happens when a person is exposed to information after an event. Elizabeth Lotus believes and shows through research that false information or changes in little details in events becomes a part of one's memory effecting the accuracy. This is why the police attempt to keep witnesses from sharing their recollection of the event with each other. The misinformation effect is similar to false memory syndrome.
The second cause of not being able to retrieve accurate memory is false memory syndrome. False memory syndrome is the creation of false memories through the persuasion of other people. This is more common when a person is under hypnosis. Research has shown that even though hypnosis makes it easier to recall memories it also makes it more likely to create false memories. Hypnosis is usually used to help adults who were abused as children to remember what happened.
