Lord Cornwallis was born on December 31, 1738 in London, England. Lord Cornwallis is most famous for his defeat at Yorktown, Virginia during the revolutionary war and being a British general-governor of India. At the age of 21 Cornwallis was deployed to Germany to fight in the Seven Year’s war. He fought for 3 years in the war and was noticed as an through his skills and military education. At the age of 24, Cornwallis received word from England that his father had died and as brother took his seat in the House of Lords. He joined the Whig Party, led by William Pitt and William Petty, Earl of Shelburne, and agreed with the American colonists and apparently foresaw the possibility of major problems if Parliament continued to ignore their concerns. Later that year, Washington reclaimed part of the state. 3 years later Cornwallis became commander of the South on June 1780. On August of that year he won a great victory over General Horatio Gates at Camden, South Carolina. From there he marched his troops into Yorktown where he would later surrender after the siege of Yorktown (britannica.com). The siege took place during the fall of 1781. News that the 34 French West Indies battle fleet ships was heading for Virginia with 3,000 infantry.
